Central venous catheters are sterile catheters inserted into a large central vein (internal jugular, subclavian or femoral) to provide vascular access for fluid/medication administration, hemodynamic monitoring, or when peripheral access is inadequate. They are typically inserted at the bedside or in theatre using ultrasound guidance and sterile technique, and may remain in place for days to weeks.
